One thing that took me a while: on my civic you had to have the clutch in to start it, but on my 4 old Toyotas you don’t.

Oldest Toyota I had I had to clutch in to start. But since it was a push type clutch, I bypassed the switch (to help prevent crank walk)

Yup, that’s what happens when I get into my girlfriend’s Vibe after getting out of my Impreza.

It’s always fun when you drive an auto for the first time in a long time and you slam the brakes with your left foot the first time you come to a stop.

I regularly switch between my BMW with reverse up and to the left, and my Jeep with reverse in the regular down and right position. It leads to some interesting gear changes.

Can you explain this a little further? Why would the clutch cause crankwalk?

Got paranoid after my brother-in-law bought an Eclipse Turbo. Those things get crankwalk just looking at it. He read if you bypass the clutch-start switch, then it’s that much less you have to clutch-in or something. Plus I was going to eventually go with a remote start. I left my IS300’s and Mazdaspeed3’s clutch switches alone, though.

I’ve only ever heard of crankwalk in the 4G63 (though I’m sure it happens in other engines; the 7-bolt 4G63 was just particularly prone to this failure).

So it kinda threw me when you mentioned “crankwalk” and “Toyota” in the same sentence.
